circulation, 2016

During daily walks along the streets of Toronto, my attention was drawn to the random, organic cracks, reminiscent of rivers, veins and arteries in the pavement.  I was curious about the way the human made, controlled structures of roadways reorganized over time and eroded into naturalized shapes. 

I began to realize that there was in fact a patterning of rivers beneath my feet — where Toronto, once an undulating terrain of ravines and rivers, through its development, was flattened to a grid, with its rivers buried as drainage channels.

The works, circulation were created through a cyanotype based process, using the cracks in my neighbourhood roadways, which overlays the Garrison Creek watershed, as basis for the imagery.

The series contemplates the metaphor of circulation within the body, within the city streets and connectivity with the environment.
